TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AREA
Resource management
Resources includes team leadership and physical or virtual resources.
The Eighth Edition groups content differently. Related topics can appear in several domains and chapters.
Understand the area
Resources include people, equipment, materials and facilities. Planning identifies needs and timing, acquisition secures them, leadership helps people work effectively, and monitoring addresses shortfalls. Maximum utilization is not always optimal: fragile schedules need available capacity and clear priorities.
Work through a project
A crane and traffic-control crew are shared by two roadworks packages. Negotiate allocation with the functional owners, confirm certifications and availability, assess alternative sequences, and update the schedule and stakeholders rather than assuming the named equipment is ready.
Check your reasoning
- Who controls each scarce resource?
- What qualifications or availability constraints matter?
- Which conflict should be resolved by negotiation versus escalation?
