TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AREA

Quality management

Scope explicitly includes deliverable and process quality; Governance includes quality assurance and the Standard quality principle supplies behavioral guidance.

The Eighth Edition groups content differently. Related topics can appear in several domains and chapters.

Understand the area

Quality is a cross-cutting concern rather than a standalone Eighth Edition performance domain. The Standard calls for quality embedded in both processes and deliverables; the Guide treats quality in scope and governance processes. Prevent defects where possible, measure against defined criteria, and distinguish assurance of a process from control/inspection of an output.

Work through a project

Specify coating thickness and installation tolerances before fabrication. Audit the supplier's process, inspect samples, record nonconformities, and verify that corrective work meets approved acceptance criteria rather than accepting a visually plausible barrier.

Check your reasoning

  1. Which requirement makes the result acceptable?
  2. Are you improving the process or inspecting its output?
  3. What evidence closes a nonconformity without hiding a change?
