TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AREA

Cost management

Finance covers estimating, budgets, funding, and cost monitoring; value decisions also involve Governance.

The Eighth Edition groups content differently. Related topics can appear in several domains and chapters.

Understand the area

The Eighth Edition's Finance domain connects estimates, budgets, funding timing, reserves and monitoring. A cost estimate is not automatically an approved budget. A contingency addresses identified uncertainty within the relevant control framework; spending and forecasting should remain tied to value and governance, not only to a favorable variance.

Work through a project

Build a budget from barrier supply, installation labor, traffic control, testing and contingency. When steel prices change, compare the forecast with the approved funding profile, assess alternatives, and route any reserve use or baseline revision through the agreed authority.

Check your reasoning

  1. Is this number an estimate, a budget, a funding need, or a forecast?
  2. What uncertainty supports the reserve?
  3. Can funding arrive in time for the planned procurement commitment?
